Nutters Everyday Naturals is a health and wellness retailer with 25 locations across western Canada.
Storefront signage is a key part of the customer experience. It establishes brand identity and provides information before customers even walk into a store. With Nutters I wanted to use the vibrant leaves and brand colours to create inviting signage. Previous iterations of the Nutters brand were featured in the primary red colour. I have continued to use the easily identifiable Nutters red in the rebranding of store locations from 2019 to 2023.
Cochrane, ALBERTA

After

Before

Cochrane was the most recent store to open in summer of 2023. For each storefront signage project I start with photograph of an empty storefront or a photo of the existing signage. I then mock-up the building in adobe illustrator where I begin to test different arrangements for signage and window decals.
In each mock-up I try to make use of as much building space as possible. For Cochrane one side of the building had doors that were unusable, so the goal was to direct customers to the main doors. To do this I covered the unusable doors in a large scale leaf graphic to make it harder to identify as an entrance point. Additionally, by placing the primary signage above the main doors it made it easier for customers to distinguish the main entrance.
SYLVAN LAKE, ALBERTA

Before

Sylvan lake was the first location to test a version of signage containing the primary logo and its leaves for the main sign. Since many other retail stores in the area were also using red in their main signage, using white and our colourful logo would help the store stand out more.
As I said before with each storefront I try to use as much building space as possible. With Sylvan Lake the biggest challenge was the peak. The usual long red rectangle signage would not work well in a narrow peak. The best way to fill the space would be to use the circular crest logo or main Nutters logo.
KAMLOOPS, B.C.

Kamloops Storefront Signage

Kamloops was one of the few stores I did not work on from start to finish. A third party contractor had already developed most of the signage, but Nutters rejected all of the proposed designs except for the "Healthy Living Starts Here" sign. Using provided dimensions of the windows and doors I came up with the following.
The space between the doors created an opportunity to include more brand visuals and some windows were left uncovered to allow for downtown foot traffic to peer into the store.
